First Sitting of Kitsilano Parliament - Nov 2, 2016
Kitsilano Secondary School's elected representatives got right down to business in the first meeting of the school Parliament. Student Council rep. Isabella Preite was elected Chair in a unanimous 18-0 vote. Following a report by Isabella and Mr. Bailey (principal), representatives discussed how the new school design facilitates collaborative teaching and learning, citing Norma Rose Point Middle School as a model. Representatives then discussed the results of the "Tell Them From Me" student survey from January 2016, specifically the high levels of anxiety reported by students. Student reps. reported that the difficult transition from junior to senior curriculum, course loads, and pressures likely causes the "grade 11 spike" in anxiety. Some commented that perhaps more choice in jr. grades and a more steady increase in homework from grade 8 to 11 might better help students cope. To close the meeting, students and teachers agreed to brainstorm on means of collecting feedback and reporting back to the wider staff and student community. Students were asked to come up with tangible suggestions for teachers to help reduce student anxiety.
The next meeting of Kitsilano Parliament is on Tuesday December 6th, 2016. All staff and students are invited to attend.
